Snapchat's ephemeral format changes how people use emojis. Here's what ⬜ means in Snaps and Chats:

When someone sends ⬜ in a Snap, it's usually a quick reaction or mood-setter — the visual nature of Snaps makes emojis a primary communication tool.
In Snap's chat feature, ⬜ functions similarly to texting — expressing a large white square — empty, clean, and open space. quickly without needing to type it all out.
Note: Snapchat also assigns emojis automatically next to friends based on your streak and interaction level. ⬜ appearing next to a friend's name has a platform-specific meaning separate from the emoji itself.
In Stories, ⬜ adds emotional color to content — creators use it to guide the viewer's reaction to what they're seeing.
